There is a version of this argument that begins with statistics. Somewhere in the mid-2010s, battery data began showing that OLED screens draw significantly less power rendering dark pixels than light ones. That fact spread. Developers picked it up. Product teams cited it in design reviews. And before long, dark mode had an alibi.

But nobody actually turned off their lights because of battery percentages. They turned them off because it felt better. Because the screen stopped competing with the room. Because the content — whatever it was — seemed to breathe more.

What light actually communicates

White backgrounds do not communicate cleanliness. They communicate paper. And paper is a substrate we invented before electricity, designed for reading in daylight, held at arm's length, with no backlight punching directly into your retina at eleven o'clock at night.

We imported that convention into software because it was familiar. Xerox PARC built their GUI around the metaphor of a desk. Light interface, light paper. The skeuomorphism was not just visual — it was ontological. The computer was pretending to be a thing you already knew.

Dark mode is not a rejection of that convention. It is a recognition that the metaphor has expired. We are not reading paper. We are inside a screen, often in the dark, often for long stretches. The substrate has different properties. The design should too.

The design problem dark mode actually solves

When you design on a dark background, you are forced to earn contrast. You cannot default to black text on white and call it accessible. Every colour decision has to carry its weight. A gold accent on deep navy says something different than the same gold on white. It is heavier. More considered. The surrounding darkness gives it consequence.

This is why most dark modes look worse than their light counterparts. They were not designed in the dark. They were designed in the light and then inverted — a CSS filter applied to a set of assumptions built for the wrong medium. The colours bleed. The hierarchy collapses. The depth is gone because depth, in dark interfaces, comes not from shadows but from layering — from the careful choreography of blacks that are almost the same but not quite.

A note on what this means for us

At the studio, we made the call early: dark first, always. Not because it is fashionable and not because of battery data, but because it demands more of the designer. You cannot be lazy in the dark. Every token earns its existence. And the work that comes out on the other side tends to look like it was built with intention, because it was.

That is the actual argument. Not a trend. Not a preference. A discipline.
